Show Codex CLI what you mean, on your Mac

Last updated

Circl lets you point at a problem on screen and describe it out loud, and Codex CLI gets both. You hold the shortcut, circle the area while you talk, and let go. Codex gets the screenshot and your words as one prompt and starts working; turn on Review before sending if you would rather check it first. Codex is one example: Circl works with any AI app.

The problem it solves

Describing a visual bug in text takes effort: which button, which spacing, which state. Taking a screenshot, saving it, dragging it into the prompt and typing around it takes more. Circl turns that into one gesture and one sentence.

An example

  1. You are looking at your app’s page and a button looks cramped. Codex CLI is open in Terminal.
  2. You hold your mouse button and circle the button while you say: “Make this button wider and give it rounded corners.”
  3. You let go. The screenshot and that sentence appear in your Codex prompt, with the image shown as an attachment (for example [Image #1]), and Circl presses Return.
  4. Codex starts working on the change.

What you need

  • Codex CLI open in your terminal, such as Terminal, iTerm2 or Ghostty.
  • macOS 14 or later, tested on Apple silicon with macOS 15.
  • Your existing Codex access, with no API keys. Circl does not include Codex or model usage.
  • On-device transcription, so your audio stays on your Mac.

Tips for better prompts

  • Circle (or hold Shift and drag a box around) the smallest area that shows the problem. Circl crops a rectangle around your selection and adds a margin, so a little of the surrounding screen is included.
  • Say the change and the reason: “Make this wider so the label fits on one line.”
  • Speech recognition can mishear names, numbers and code terms. If that matters for a prompt, turn on Review before sending and check it before you press Return.
  • Press Esc to cancel a selection you don’t want; nothing is sent.

One example of many

Circl works with any AI app, not just this one: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Codex, Claude Code, Cursor and basically any app with a text box. The motion is the same everywhere. See works with any AI app.

Limits

  • In the terminal your words stay on the clipboard afterwards, as before; Restore Previous Clipboard, in Circl’s menu, brings yours back.
  • Circl does not start Codex for you: Codex must already be open in your terminal, and your Codex plan’s limits apply.
